Featherduster has an early spring clean

The photo is one of many lovely ones to be found on fish stuff.

Everything was feeling a bit dated so I am attempting a good old clean out and update but I apologise that it won’t be fully up to date for a while.

A meme award

Such excitement…I have a meme award from Musings From the Sofa which is my first ever award. To claim the award I have to list seven personality traits and nominate seven other bloggers (which will highly tricky).

So “Thank You Very Much” kind Musings From the Sofa and I hope I can live up to your expectations.

1. I tend to have unexpectedly strong emotional reactions to the news of the day. I can usually be found shouting at televisions or crying a lot. I’ve actually had to stop watching late night news.

2. I am always far too early for EVERYTHING. Including my wedding. I suspect I may be early to my own funeral.

3. I am stubborn beyond any rational boundaries. I am quite convinced that the world would be a better place if only everyone did everything the way I think it should be done and will just hang on in there until people come round to my way of thinking. Needless to say, I am still waiting on most issues to which I have applied this logic to be resolved.

4. I am organised and and somewhat famous for it. I will always have a list. I can be relied upon for timetables and directions, wet wipes, tissues, safety pins…I despair of disorganisation and tardiness (see point 2).

5. I laugh in the face of adversity. That makes me sound very brave. In actual fact it’s a completely rubbish trait that means I will always try to make a joke or raise a laugh when people are feeling sad/uncomfortable/angry. I should learn that this is not always appropriate.

6. I am restless. I do not sit still either physically or mentally. It’s quite tiring for everyone.

7. I am kind. I thought we ought to try to end on a positive but actually it needs qualification. I have a tendency to be kind to everyone but myself.

So now the tricksiest bit. I nominate the following for the award:

1. QWERTYQueen (when she’s back from Devon)

2. Charlotte’s Web

3. Clare Grant

4. Spiral Skies

5. Chocolate and Vodka

6. Aunty Drama (in an attempt to get her blogging again)

7. Miranda (although she may be busy having a baby)

Getting back into this blogging malarkey

I know I have been blogging lite recently which is daft because I have many things to blog about like my jolly nice trip to Paris, my surprisingly pleasant weekend in Bury St Edmunds and my obsession with my iPhone gadgetry wotnot.

Not only have I not been writing blogs, but I’ve really had to streamline my reading of them. Partly this is to do with Technorati and their exceedingly irritating inability to deliver my Favourites in a sensible and consistent fashion. I’ve just had a good old catch up though and would like to declare the following blogs as my current faves:

Musings From  the Sofa

Louder Than Swahili

Charlotte’s Web

Spiral Skies

and 3BT which makes me smile everyday

And these are new discoveries I am  quite liking a lot (oh yes, we’re in command of the English language today)

The Times of Miranda

QWERTY Queen

So I am trying to get back into some sort of blogosphere engagement and generally get my shit together (focusing on the blogging getting my shit together rather than more generally in life – good grief that’s more of a complicated life mission). You see it’s got so bad I cannot even string a sentence together (in my defence I have written three proposals today and have used most of my brain cells).

ABC meme

I am aware that I have been stupidly silent which is even more daft because I’ve actually been up to a lot of STUFF (I suspect STUFF may have been taking up most of my time too). So thought I’d do a meme which I have pinched from musingsfromthesofa to get me back in the swing of this blogging malarkey.

A – An advantage you have – living in the best city in the world and being in a fortunate enough position to enjoy it.

B – Blue or brown eyes –  Green which I particularly like (although attendant freckles and paler than a pint of milk skin is not quite so much fun).

C – Chore you hate – ironing. The problem is I am obsessed with non-creased clothes, sheets, table linen (yes even tea towels – I am tragic) so I have to do it but I hate virtually everything about it.

D – Dad’s name – depends which one (not Dad, name because he has an ‘official’ name and a ‘real’ name, he keeps saying he’s going to change it by deed poll but I’m fairly convinced he’ll never get round to it). David, by the way.

E – Essential start of your day – tea. Cannot function without it.

F – Favourite colour – purple, although I have now realised that wearing it is usually a mistake.

G – Greatest thing you’ve ever done that made you feel really good – going to Tanzania to volunteer and jumping out of a plane whilst I was there.

H – Habit you have – sighing. Apparently it is a natural response for relieving tension but I understand from those around me that it is highly annoying!

I – Issue you hate that the world tries to make you pursue – I’m with Becky on this one. Celebrity. Can’t bloody stand it and so not interested in people who have not done anything to achieve their fame and so not understanding young people who just want to be famous when they grow up…what do you want to be famous for? Blank stare.

J – Job title – Head of Healthcare which makes me sound far more important than I actually am.

K – Kohls or Target – This is where this being a US meme leaves me flummoxed. I understand they are stores…? Possibly? In which case, John Lewis.

L – Living arrangements – little house in south west London. About to undergo some renovation – wish me luck with builders and other tradesfolk who frankly terrify me.

M – Music you like – from Jolene by Dolly to Jolene by the Sisters of Mercy and most genres in between. Current faves are Snow Patrol and Lily Allen. Although a couple of weeks ago I saw an awesome Moby gig. And a show tune will always get me going.

N – Nicknames – Bog – ask Lizzie, she invented it.

O – Overnight hospital stay – a few, all shorties thank goodness.

P – Pet Peeve – where do I start (I think I may just be an angry person?). Peeve indicates a little irritant though so probably crap spelling and grammar.

Q – Quote that you like most – “life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans” – John Lennon. I am completely aware that a ton of other people say this too. Hey ho, I’m a conformist.

R – Right or left handed – so right handed that my left hand often wonders on its purpose.

S – Siblings – one lovely little sister.

T – Time you wake up – unnecessarily early. I am a bad sleeper (yes, I know we all know that). I get up at 6.30 – usually about 10 minutes after I’ve just gone back to snooze.

U – Underwear – BIG pants, I go for smooth lines and I know they are probably horrible to look at (but there’s noone around to look at them), but they look good under things (or rather don’t look at all which is the whole point).

V – Vegetable you dislike – sprouts, doesn’t everyone?

W – What makes you run late – double, triple checking where the bobbins my keys are.

X – X-rays you’ve had – neck, back, ribs, fingers, wrist, ankles, feet, toes, lungs, bowels…plus ultrasounds on various parts…and cameras on the inside…I’m fairly well checked out in the internal pictures department.

Y – Yummy food you make – unfortunately I seem to find my of the food I make yummy (hence the current waistline issues). My roast chicken is pretty bloody good though.

Z – Zoo animal – since the whole Africa thing, I cannot even imagine an animal in a zoo. A real proper lion in a real proper landscape…I know not everyone can see it but it would be so wonderful if everyone could.

She's so beautiful

Three whole years and good news

Now who would have thought three years ago sat in a meeting room that coincidentally I can see from my current office (but is in a totally different building and a company so distant in culture that I might as well have been working on Mars back then – it was about as hospitable as well), that I would still be blogging?

I had marvellous news yesterday. After three and a half years of freelancing, I am now a permanent employee somewhere. This is very exciting.

I’ve wanted to find a work home since I came back from Tanzania because I realised I missed the stuff that often makes people want to freelance in the first place (people management, the odd bout of office politics). After all I never exactly made a conscious decision to become a freelancer, rather it was a financial necessity and a case of being very badly burned by making a duff choice in employer. But finding a home has been tricky: not a huge number of jobs out there (okay admittedly way more than there are at the moment, have you seen the back pages of PR Week? I haven’t seen a recruitment consultancy ad for weeks); people being highly suspicious of why I wanted to give up freelancing; and frankly some very unpleasant interviews with people who had the social graces of a rottweiler . (Clue, you don’t have to approach a prospective candidate like your fresh from the Guantanamo Bay School of Interview Techniques).

But now I have a proper, permanent job; a set of objectives just for me; the prospect of doing some training and learning more – hurrah on many levels.
